Hello,

Don't worry this is not suddenly a Dubai hustle-culture newsletter.

Rather I wanted to let you know that I have been hard at work on Labour Behind the Label's Big Give campaign which is live and which will actually double your money.

The Big Give is a fundraising drive which doubles donations. All the money we are raising will go towards fighting frontline Urgent Appeals – urgent, global work that directly acts to stop the worst wrongdoing in the fashion industry. When workers have their wages stolen, when factories are reported as dangerously unsafe, when trade union leaders are fired, arrested, or imprisoned – Labour Behind the Label fight to stop brands from getting away with the worst of their exploitation.

This work has helped lead to compensation for Rana Plaza victims, the banning of carcinogenic sandblasting and the withdrawal of 48,000 arrest warrants in Bangladesh. I've worked with Labour Behind the Label for over a decade - right from the start of the years long fight to get compensation for Rana Plaza families from brands like Primark and Benetton.

One article, one post, one protest can never be enough for these protracted and complicated cases where the lives of thousands of people are at stake – achieving justice takes exactly the kind of dedicated and relentless campaign work that you will be supporting if you donate to Labour Behind the Label through the Big Give.

Urgent Action for Garment Workers – Big Give
Garment workers face wage theft, union busting, and exploitation. Your support helps workers fight back and holds fashion brands accountable …

Personal experience tells me the Big Give is great

When I donated £20 to the Big Give this morning, it was doubled by match funding to £40 and then another £5 was added by gift aid. It genuinely felt great to donate £20 to charity and have it turn into £45 at no extra cost.

Some of you are already signed up to Labour Behind the Label and will know all about the Big Give, while some of you simply like my work and/or me and are interested in knowing how you can support the things we mutually care about. Whichever category you fall into I hope you'll chuck a few quid in the pot between now and Midday GMT on Tuesday 9th December.

I can tell you that right now, Labour Behind the Label are working on the case of 130 Burmese garment workers who were fired from making Tesco jeans by VK Garments in Thailand. These women endured years of 99-hour working weeks, confiscated passports, sexual abuse and only one day off per month – and then were fired when they spoke out. These women are now suing Tesco to try and get compensation for their horrific experiences and Labour Behind the Label will be there until justice is served.

Thank you so much for reading and watching, feel free to forward this to the special people in your life who want justice for garment workers.

In solidarity, Tansy.

p.s. Is something ethics + fashion related bothering you? Send me a letter for the Patched advice column to DearPatched@proton.me

The next edition of this newsletter is a very special guest edition of Patched and I am so excited to publish it - stay tuned.

p.p.s. You are invited to the launch of Extraction Fashion which in the light of the horrific floods in Asia feels even more critical. My solidarity and thoughts are with everyone facing this humanitarian crisis of historic proportions.
