Writing while the world burns
For the past four years I have felt the pressure of writing a book during the climate crisis. When we do not have many years left to change the world, is writing even a legitimate response to this unfurling tragedy?
Now I'm writing to you from a scorching hot London, a city cooking in the fires of burnt fossil fuels. The heat is oppressive and frightening.
As the Met Office issues its second ever red heat warning, and Monday night's storms brought 29,000 lightning strikes down on the south of England, I hope with every fibre of my being that we listen to the elements and stop the fossil fuel industry.
I keep writing because I want to shine an unflinching light on this destructive system which overproduces for profit while expelling ‘broken’ things and ‘unwanted’ people to the margins of society. Now that Charity Shop World is coming out I hope it galvanizes you towards change and I intend for every book launch to be a source of information and a way point (or starting point) for our collective building of a new way of living. Please do join me at an event and let's write the next chapter together.
Book news and pre-orders
If you like my work, please pre-order Charity Shop World - it makes a huge difference. One of the many reasons I picked Indigo Press is their truly exquisite books. Pre-order and you'll receive a first edition, petite hardback which will fit nicely in your bag and look stunning when you read it on the bus.
Need another reason to pre-order? The Bookseller(!) listed Charity Shop World as a Top Ten Book Not To Miss for its September issue.

Author and journalist Tansy Hoskins investigates the global fashion industry. She also volunteers at a charity shop. This is her brilliant and galvanising investigation into what happens to donated items, especially those not sold. From used underwear to wolf pelts and the irresponsibility of high-street fashion brands, it is a sometimes amusing, frequently shocking account of the consequences of consumerism and needing to rid ourselves of an avalanche of 'stuff', and of those on the margins of society for whom charity shops - and the human connection they provide - are also a lifeline. Read it and you will donate (and hopefully also buy) more responsibly.
Caroline Sanderson, The Bookseller
A huge thank you for reading, pre-ordering, and to everyone fighting back against the fossil fuel industry.
In solidarity, Tansy.
